Celebrate "Cooperation for a Prosperous World" This International Credit Union Day®
On Thursday, October 15, 2026, millions of credit union members across the globe will come together to celebrate International Credit Union Day® (ICU Day).
Marking its 78th anniversary, this annual event recognises the huge impact and achievements of the global credit union movement. This year’s theme, “Cooperation for a Prosperous World,” highlights how financial cooperatives work together to build stronger, fairer, and more resilient communities.
At Gateway Credit Union, we are proud to be part of this incredible movement.
The Credit Union Difference
Unlike traditional for-profit banks, credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives owned and run by their members. Globally, more than 67,000 credit unions serve over 400 million people in more than 100 countries—providing a fair, responsible alternative for financial services and acting as a force for positive economic and social change.
Here at Gateway Credit Union, our mission has always been simple: put our members and community first. Owned entirely by the people who save and borrow with us, we return our profits back to you through competitive rates, low fees, and local community investment.
Banking for Everyone
First celebrated in 1948, ICU Day is an opportunity to reflect on our proud history while looking toward the future.
Worldwide, around 1.3 billion people still lack access to basic financial services. Credit unions offer a member-first, cooperative business model designed specifically to reach underserved communities and help everyone build financial stability.
